The word Qigong breaks down into Qi (pronounced "chee") and Gong. Although the word Qi is used to refer to all types of energy, it is commonly used in terms of energy relating to the human body. The Chinese character for Gong combines the words "productive labor" and "strength", and can be translated as work, practice, cultivate, refine, or the power to produce an effect.
So, Qigong can be translated as the work of cultivating or developing your body's bioelectric energy. Qigong exercises are generally slow, gentle body movements that are coordinated and connected with the mind (or intent) and the breath. Used to gently coax the body into fluidity, Qigong is practiced all over the world to regain or maintain health.
