Taijiquan & Qigong
Sam Masich I have been incredibly fortunate in that Sam has been my teacher since 1995. Sam is not only one of the most gifted internal artists out there, but the best teacher...of anything...I've ever run into. Check out his articles page, and the Little Productions section- where you will find Sam's instructional DVDs, music CDs, and more.
Jan Parker Many of you will know Jan from past workshops at the Natural Arts Center - check out her weekly (ish) writings, and her wonderful glass beads.
Karin Collins - if you happen to live in Seattle, start studying with Karin as soon as possible. We're trying to get her to move to Eugene...
ShouyuLiang.com The website of Shou-Yu Liang Wushu Taiji Qigong Institute. Master Liang is one of Sam's teachers.
YMAA.com The website of
Dr. Yang Zwing-Ming, who is also one of Sam's teachers, and one of the
most prolific Martial Arts and Qigong authors out there.
Cupping & Massage
The Naga Center in Portland is a school for traditional Thai medicine, run by our friend Nephyr Jacobsen.
Nephyr is an amazing teacher and bodyworker and the Naga Center offers
weekend workshops and five day intensives on Thai massage, cupping,
scraping, herbs, Thai language classes...and study trips to Thailand.
HealthTraditions in Australia, the website of Bruce Bentley, and possibly the best
cupping info on the web. There's a fantastic interview with Bruce titled The Subtle Cup in the Essays section. While you're there, also check out his article A Brief History of Cupping, and Gua Sha. Bruce is one of my cupping teachers and I highly recommend his workshops - his schedule is on his website, and our newsletter will let you know when he'll be in the area.
Inner Balance in Vancouver, BC has some great cupping info as well as cupping and massage products. They used to have a storefront in Vancouver’s Chinatown that was a blast to poke around in. Alas, it is now internet order only.
Qigong Massage, by Dr. Yang Jwing-Ming. An absolutely fantastic resource if you're just starting out with bodywork, or have been working bodies for years. YMAA puts out top-notch instructional and informational books and DVDs, and this is one my favorites.
Local Classes
Eugene YMCA Our own Erica Anderson teaches ongoing Yang Style Tai Chi (Mondays and Wednesdays, 8:00 am) and Qigong (Tuesdays, 8:00 am) classes at the Y.
JanJimJam.com Jan & Jim's instructional/reference CDs, and info on upcoming JanJimJam workshops.
Art Baner (Bellingham, WA) has produced a wonderful book called The Heart of Qigong, and the companion Heart of Qigong Workbook. You can order directly from Art's site, FullCircleArts.
Art is one of those people who seamlessly blends study with practice,
simplicity with depth, unwavering focus with a sharp wit and sense of
humor, and adherence to the tenets of Qigong with adventurous play. All
of these come together in The Heart of Qigong - aptly named, this book gets to the core of the art in a very personal, and personable, way.
I was very lucky to have met Art near the beginning of my adventure in
the internal arts. A valued friend and training partner, Art is who
comes to mind when I hear the term Scholar Warrior.
Our friend and training buddy Nancy Walker (in Vancouver, BC) has been making some wonderful Taiji/Qigong clay figures. I got to see them in person over the summer, and they are absolutely fantastic. And, I'm lucky enough to have one at home!
Check them (and Nancy's other work) out here.
Wing Ming Herbs
They carry size 5 cups, and usually stock some really sweet glass cups
of all sizes. They also have a pretty wide assortment of gua sha tools,
herbs, patent formulas…and the staff is great. Sadly, they’re in
Portland (82nd & Division), and don’t have a Eugene branch.
CAI Corporation If you can't get to Portland to hand pick your cups, CAI is an excellent option for glass cupping sets.
